Kwai Chang Caine is the son of an American sailor and a Chinese woman, which immediately makes him an outcast. After several attempts as a child, he gains entry into the Shaolin monastery and studies to become a monk. After several years, he has proven his worth and becomes one under the tutelage of the blind head monk Master Po and his assistant Master Kan. Sometime in the 1870s, Caine kills the Emperor's nephew after the youth shot and killed Master Po. Caine then runs away to America not only to escape the Chinese authorities, but to look for the half-brother he never knew. However, as he travels throughout the American west, he constantly runs into prejudice, outlaws, and other conflicts that he tries to solve peacefully. Unfortunately, he often is forced to use the ancient martial art of Kung Fu that he learned during his studies at the temple.
